When Kantara was released in 2022, it was more than a film; it was a cultural phenomenon. Rooted in folklore and spirituality, the movie’s climax left audiences across India awestruck. Now, Rishab Shetty and Hombale Films are back with their much-anticipated prequel, Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1, scheduled for release on October 2, 2025. Here’s everything we know so far about what to expect.

A grand and ambitious prequel

According to Variety, Hombale Films calls Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1 their “most ambitious” project yet, aiming to expand the cinematic universe of Kantara with a bigger scale and deeper mythological exploration. Unlike the original, which stayed rooted in a coastal village, this prequel goes back centuries to explore the origins of the rituals and legends that shaped the story.

Expanding the Myth and Spiritual Core

The prequel will delve more deeply into the spiritual and mythological themes hinted at in the first film. Expect to see ancient traditions like Bhoota Kola re-examined, alongside the introduction of divine guardians and ancestral spirits central to coastal Karnataka’s folklore. By tracing how these rituals began, the movie promises to answer questions that the original left open.

Historical Backdrop and Large-Scale Battles in Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1

Reports suggest that Chapter 1 will be set during the time of powerful dynasties such as the Kadambas. This gives the film a backdrop of royalty, feudal struggles, and wars. With kings, warriors, and political intrigue entering the frame, the stakes are far higher than before. The film will feature large-scale battle sequences, extensive sets, and action that’s far grander compared to its predecessor.

Production Value Like Never Before

From horse riding to sword fighting, Rishab Shetty has reportedly undergone intense training to prepare for the physical demands of his role. With a production budget rumored to cross ₹200 crore, the movie is designed as a pan-India spectacle. The trailer itself already promises a cinematic spectacle that blends action, divinity, and visual grandeur.

Commercial Success of Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1 Before Release

Interestingly, OTTPlay reported that Kantara: A Legend - Chapter 1 has already made profits through its pre-release business, showing just how strong the anticipation is among audiences and distributors alike. Few Indian films achieve this level of hype before even hitting theaters, which speaks volumes about the cultural impact of the first movie.

Cast Highlights

Rishab Shetty leads the film in a dual role, returning as the central character (Berme) and also directing the prequel. Rukmini Vasanth plays the female lead, Kanakavathi. She has described this role as a “dream come true.”

Gulshan Devaiah joins the cast as Kulashekara, making a strong entry with a regal and intense presence.

Also featured are Jayaram, Pramod Shetty, Rakesh Poojary, Hariprashanth MG, Prakash Thuminad, and others in supporting roles, helping build the ensemble required for this epic-scale narrative.

What Audiences Can Expect

Put simply, Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1 is expected to deliver on two fronts: scale and soul. While the original touched hearts with its intimate portrayal of tradition and nature, the prequel is set to combine those roots with epic action sequences, divine mysticism, and a sweeping historical canvas.
