Two highly anticipated movies were released on October 21, 2025, during Diwali.  Despite the contrast in movie genres, Thamma, being a horror comedy, and Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat, being a romantic drama, both films had a box office clash due to simultaneous release.

But which one is winning the battle?

The Films at a Glance

Thamma

Thamma is the latest addition to Maddock's Horror Comedy Universe, which is India's most successful franchise, critically and commercially. The leading cast of the movie is Ayushmann Khurrana, Rashmika Mandanna, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Paresh Rawal, with Varun Dhawan cameo. The supernatural, humorous movie is directed by Aditya Sarpotdar and written by Niren Bhatt, Suresh Mathew, and Arun Falara

 Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat

Ek Deewane ki Deewaniyat is a romantic drama directed by Milap Zaveri with themes of obsession, madness, and emotional conflicts. The prominent cast of the movie is Harshvardhan Rane and Sonam Bajwa. Harshvardhan's Sanam Teri Kasam became a massive hit this year upon its re-release, and his latest venture is continuing his dream run at the box office.

Opening Performance

Thamma earned about Rs 24.50 crore net as per Indiatimes. It had an occupancy rate of 34.5%. Its occupancy started at 15.76% in the morning, peaked at 42.91% in the evening, and had a slight fall by night. The horror movie saw a large screen count with 5700 shows.

Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat, as per Hindustan Times, made Rs 8.50-9 crore net on its opening day with a higher occupancy rate of about 39.5%. The occupancy showed a strong upward trend from 19.76% in the morning to 47.16% in the evening, holding around 44.76% at night. The movie did open on fewer screens, around 2400. Still, it showed strong audience engagement due to its emotional intensity.

The Verdict (So Far)

Thamma is currently winning the box office, fueled by its strong franchise and mass appeal, attracting family and youth. The success can also be attributed to its connection with the upcoming films of MHCU, like Shakti Shalini and Bhediya 2.

On the other hand, Ek Deewane ki Deewaniyat had a lesser screen opening but still managed to collect ₹12.13 crore net till now. The movie got a great response from tier 2 & 3 cities, and considering the success of Saiyaara, it has the potential to rise.
