Apple is set to make some of its biggest redesigns in iPhone history, as there are major changes expected for the entire iPhone 18 range and its first foldable smartphone. Multiple reports indicate that Apple is looking to make some meaningful changes to its hardware lineup in the near term that will help shake up consumer interest and spur faster refresh rates between now and 2027.

The next-generation devices could feature smaller displays, under-display Face ID, new camera features, and an all-new foldable design. The modifications are thought to be Apple's largest smartphone makeover since the iPhone X was released in 2017.

The iPhone 18 Pro could introduce Apple’s cleanest display yet

The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max might have a much smaller Dynamic Island than the existing ones. Apple reportedly has a test of under-display Face ID technology that would potentially shrink the cut-out area without compromising the company's security or facial recognition capabilities.

The new design may enhance the gaming, streaming, and multitasking experience. Some reports also indicate that Apple is looking to make the glass design more consistent in the rear, to minimize the two-tone effect of the rear glass on its latest Pro devices.

Apple’s first foldable iPhone may reshape the premium market

In addition, Apple is likely to be getting into the foldable smartphone market in late 2026 with a high-priced foldable in the shape of a book. There have been reports of a larger inner display that opens up to be a tablet form, but is still small enough to close up when not in use.

For the foldables now in circulation, durability and crease reduction are high priorities that Apple is purported to be working on a lot. The company says the displays are going to be smoother and more seamless when using the device every day.

The foldable iPhone could also have advanced multi-tasking capabilities for productivity, entertainment, and consumer purposes. Apple can market the device as an ultra-premium offering for consumers looking for a more customizable smartphone experience, analysts said.

A futuristic all-glass iPhone could headline Apple’s 20th anniversary plans

In addition to the iPhone 18 lineup, Apple is also working on a completely remodeled anniversary model that it predicts will be available in 2027. According to reports from Bloomberg and other tech sites, it may have a perfect, all-glass design, with rounded corners that flow right into the screen.

The anniversary edition can also eliminate the visible cut-out for display altogether, hiding both the front camera and Face ID under the display. Some sources also say Apple is developing solid-state controls, which may eventually supersede the buttons altogether.

Faster chips and smarter cameras may power the next generation

The next devices will likely also feature significant performance enhancements, as well as an updated look. According to reports, Apple's next-generation A20 processor will be manufactured on the 2nm process, thereby offering the company better battery efficiency, faster performance, and lower thermal consumption.

The new improvements to the camera could involve a new 48MP super-wide sensor and better telephoto capability for better low-light photography and zoom shots. There's also a report that Apple is working on a variable aperture feature to enable sharper images in varying lighting conditions.

According to the iPhone 18's roadmap, Apple is heading into one of the most revolutionary hardware eras in its history with its first foldable phone. Upcoming years may feature a number of the biggest changes to the iPhone lineup ever, from slimmer display technology to upgraded cameras, to a crease-free foldable display, and a futuristic all-glass anniversary edition.

Apple has not officially announced these features, but a number of reports in the industry suggest the company is working out a redesign cycle, in which it will offer significantly more than just annual changes.
