The Black Phone came out as a post-pandemic horror movie in 2021 and became one of the most definitive movies of the year. The hit movie was inspired by Stephen King's son's short story, Black Phone.

Even though the original ended with The Grabber’s death, does that stop him from plotting revenge against his killer?

The Black Phone 2 continues the original movie, but this time, it has a more mature environment. Making this sequel scarier, darker, and having more graphic elements.

What Is The Black Phone 2 About?

Finney, now a 17-year-old high schooler, is struggling with the trauma of his abduction and being the one who killed THE GRABBER. His sister, Gwen, on the other hand, is seeing nightmares, including a strange black phone. She is having disturbing visions of three children at a winter camp called Alpine Lake.

“It took me a long time… but you of all people know that dead is just a word”, said The Grabber over the phone when Gwen answers in one of her dreams. This indicated that The Grabber is on a mission of revenge, despite being laid to rest.

Finney and Gwen go to the camp for investigation. As Gwen's nightmares worsen and become more disturbing, they find out the loose knot between Gwen's psychic abilities and their own mother, all connecting to The Grabber.

Returning Cast & New Faces

The sequel has returning characters from the original, such as Ethan Hawk as The Grabber, this time having a supernatural presence in the movie, Mason Thames as Finney Blake, Madeleine McGraw as Gwen Blake, and their father, Terrance Blake, as Jeremy Davies. Miguel Mora also returns, but this time playing a new character, Ernesto.

The new faces in the high school coming-of-age horror are Demián Bichir as Armando (the winter camp supervisor) and Arianna Rivas as his niece, Mustang.

Who’s Behind the Sequel?

Scott Derrickson directs Black Phone 2. He was also the co-writer along with C. Robert Cargill.

The supernatural horror is produced by Scott Derrickson, C. Robert Cargill, and Jason Blum under Blumhouse. Joe Hill, Adam Hendricks, and Ryan Turek as executive producers.

When Is The Black Phone 2 Releasing?

The black phone 2 is releasing on October 17, 2025, across the United States. Making it a perfect Halloween watch. It premiered on September 25, 2025, at Fantastic Fest.

The hyped sequel does not have any streaming plans disclosed yet.

What Makes The Black Phone 2 Worth the Wait

Black Phone 2's wait is justified due to its well-done character development, higher gore and graphic atmosphere, and themes of trauma and revenge.

The gap of 4 years between the two movies has changed the setting from a middle school coming-of-age movie to a more mature high school coming-of-age movie. The movie explores the aftermath of the events of the first movie, touching on lingering trauma in this one.

According to Scott Derrickson, the maturity of the protagonists has made this movie more visually graphic, scarier, and grislier.

Final Thoughts

Black Phone 2 looks convincing as a chilling horror sequel, with its release timed perfectly for the spooky season.

The follow-up looks fresh with deeper themes and gore, but continues the original's essence. The real question is, will you pick up the call this Halloween season?
