Fans who grew up with Cher Horowitz just got some disappointing news. Peacock has officially scrapped the planned Clueless sequel series that would have brought Alicia Silverstone back into one of her most iconic roles.
The project, first announced in 2025, was shaping up to revisit Cher’s life decades after the original film. But while the cancellation sounds final, it might not be the end of the road just yet.
What Happened to the Clueless Sequel Series?
The sequel series was in development as a continuation of Clueless, with Silverstone set to return as Cher Horowitz, this time navigating adulthood instead of Beverly Hills high school life.
Behind the scenes, the project had strong backing. Original writer-director Amy Heckerling was involved, along with producers like Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. Silverstone herself was also attached as an executive producer, which gave the revival a sense of authenticity.
Despite that, Peacock decided not to move forward. No detailed reason has been publicly confirmed, but in today’s streaming landscape, even recognizable IP is not a guaranteed win.
A Revival Fans Actually Wanted
What made this version different is that it wasn’t trying to reinvent Clueless. It was leaning into what people already loved. The original film, loosely inspired by Emma, became a defining piece of 90s pop culture. From its fashion to its dialogue, it still holds up today in a way few teen comedies do. That is why the idea of seeing Cher years later felt appealing. Not a reboot, not a side story, but a proper continuation. That alone made the cancellation hit harder than usual.
Not the First Time a Clueless Series Fell Apart

This isn’t even Peacock’s first attempt at bringing Clueless back.
Back in 2020, a different series centered around Dionne, originally played by Stacey Dash, was also in development. That version never made it to production either. At this point, it’s clear that studios see value in the brand, but actually getting a new version of the ground has been a challenge.
It Might Still Find a New Home
Here’s the part that keeps this from being a completely closed case.
Even though Peacock stepped away, CBS Studios and Paramount are reportedly still interested in the project and are exploring other platforms. In the current streaming era, shows moving between platforms are not unusual, especially when the concept already has built-in audience recognition. That doesn’t guarantee anything, but it does mean the sequel isn’t fully dead. It’s more in limbo than cancelled outright.
Why Clueless Still Matters Today
Few films from the 90s have stayed as culturally relevant as Clueless. It wasn’t just a hit when it released; it built a long-lasting identity through its characters, humor, and style. The franchise expanded into a TV series in the late 90s, inspired a stage musical, and has continued to resurface in pop culture over the years. Silverstone herself has revisited Cher in appearances and campaigns, reminding audiences that the character still connects. That is exactly why Hollywood keeps trying to bring it back. The audience is still there.
A Cancellation That Doesn’t Feel Final
For now, the Clueless sequel series is off the table at Peacock. But unlike many cancelled projects, this one still has movement behind it. Studios don’t keep shopping a project unless they believe it has value. And in this case, that value comes from a film that never really faded out of relevance.
Cher Horowitz may not be returning just yet, but it doesn’t look like this is where her story ends. For more updates on upcoming shows, cancellations, and industry shifts, you can explore more coverage on The Screen Light.
